Group Logic Puzzle and Interviewing

Group Exercise – 4 students from the class are pulled out and given each a fact (as below). The remainder of the class is divided into groups, each of which can interview the students – having students take turns asking questions of each of the four works well. The students with the information should answer the questions directly. For example if person A was asked if they won, they should answer no. If they were asked if they came in second, they would answer they do not know. If Person D were asked if they were first, second, or third they would answer no as they have knowledge that they were last.

Students are told that one person in the group of 4 is lying. Neither the students in the class nor the chosen students will know which of the students are lying. The objective is to determine which student is lying (they are told one student is lying) and which student won the competition.

Person A – “Our team was neither first nor last”

Person B – “Our team was not last”

Person C – “We were first”

Person D – “We were last”
